Institutions of Higher Learning Offer Cell Phone Recycling on Campuses

Published: March 12, 2010

Penn State, Indiana University, East Carolina University, University of Maryland and UNC-Charlotte sign up

For years cell phone companies and wireless providers have been hawking everything from custom cases to smartphones to student populations. It appears that colleges and universities have begun to recognize that these items need to be recycled properly and that they can make much needed funds at the same time.

Students and administrators alike have begun to implement ECO-CELL's recycling program on a growing number of campuses across the country. These schools are using the program to raise critically needed funds for various causes. For example, Penn State uses their proceeds to benefit an orphanage in Tanzania; STAND chapters at the University of Maryland and University of North Carolina-Charlotte are using the program to raise money for the Genocide Intervention Network; and Indiana University Bloomington will use their funds to help with other sustainability efforts on campus.
